Complex rehabilitation

Postgraduate stretchRestorative dentistry

A heavily worn or compromised dentition needs phased diagnosis, occlusal planning, a maintenance strategy and realistic prognosis.

01

Understand

A complex rehabilitation is a sequence of disease control, diagnostic planning, trial, definitive treatment and maintenance. Aesthetic goals must coexist with biology and function.

02

Assess

Assess every tooth's prognosis, periodontal support, endodontic status, occlusion, space, parafunction and ability to maintain care. Coordinate specialties where changes in one arch affect another.

03

Apply

Use a reversible or provisional phase to test proposed changes. Consent for time, cost, repair and the possibility that an apparently ideal design may need adjustment.

04 / A CLOSER LOOK

Key distinctions

Rehabilitation may change several interacting systems at once: tooth support, guidance, vertical dimension and cleaning access. Sequence periodontal and endodontic care before committing to final prostheses. A provisional phase can test comfort and function, but it cannot eliminate every future complication. Plan maintenance from the outset, including repair costs and likely lifespan.

05 / IN PRACTICE

Think through a case

A full-mouth wear case is rebuilt without testing a new vertical dimension. Speech, muscle comfort or restoration failures may reveal an avoidable planning error.

06 / EXAM PITFALL

The distinction to remember

Do not let an attractive wax-up substitute for disease control, prognosis and a reversible trial.
