Conscious sedation

Postgraduate stretchAcute care & emergencies

Sedation requires trained teams, assessment, monitoring, rescue capability and recovery criteria under current standards. It does not replace local anaesthesia.

01

Understand

Conscious sedation reduces anxiety while maintaining verbal contact and protective reflexes within defined techniques. It requires training, selection, monitoring and rescue readiness.

02

Assess

Assess airway, medical status, fasting and escort requirements under the chosen technique and current standards. Explain that local anaesthetic and definitive dental treatment are still needed.

03

Apply

Use a trained team, documented observations and discharge criteria. Escalate when a patient's complexity or required depth exceeds the service's competence.

04 / A CLOSER LOOK

Key distinctions

The intended sedation endpoint is responsive conscious sedation, not unplanned deeper anaesthesia. Pre-assessment, trained personnel, equipment, monitoring and recovery form a single safety system. Sedation does not remove the need for consent, local anaesthesia or treatment planning. A patient's airway, medical complexity or lack of escort may change whether the planned service is appropriate.

05 / IN PRACTICE

Think through a case

A patient wants sedation for an extraction but has significant airway and medical complexity. A higher-level service may be safer than stretching a practice protocol.

06 / EXAM PITFALL

The distinction to remember

Do not confuse a calm appearance with adequate monitoring, recovery or rescue capability.
